Back Roads Trips
While it is getting harder and harder to take trips without having to spend a small portion of the trip driving on an
Interstate it can still be done. Trips that don’t require many miles on interstates can be great fun. I think we are
missing so many things if we just speed along the interstates. Some of the best memories my daughter and I
have are trips we took when we got off the Interstate.
Fort Worth to Grand Tetons National Park - a great 7 day drive ask for details
In Texas Take Hwy 80 east instead of I-20 & Hwy 180 if heading west
In East Texas in Jonesville shop at the TC Lindsey general store that has been in business since 1847.
If heading for the hill country in Texas go southwest of Fort Worth and take hwy 281 south instead of I-35
Scenic Trips along State Highways, FM or Dirt Roads
Get off the Interstate & take a drive on a state highway, a FM road or a dirt road
This country is starting to look the same whether it is in Texas, Florida, New York, California, North
Carolina, Michigan and Illinois or wherever you drive along the interstates in the US. No wonder
everyone speeds along the Interstate highways with the passenger watching videos or playing with
electronic games since they only thing to look at are the same restaurants, same strip malls and stores
you have just down the street from where you live. Other than landscape and temperature changes you
can be thousands of miles from home but the neighborhood looks the same. How boring?

Gloucester, MA to Kennebunkport, ME
Starting in Gloucester enjoy the history of the oldest fishing port in the US since 1623. Go whale watching off Cape
Ann and take the time to take the short drive around Cape Ann on 127/127A. Be sure to stop in Rockport and enjoy
the art galleries, shopping, and especially Tuck’s Candy. Take 128/133 north out of Gloucester and visit the unique
towns of Essex and Ipswich for shopping and dining and continue on hwy 1A up to Newbury where my family landed
in 1630. Newburyport has great dining, shopping & go by the library or historical society to do some research on your
family ancestors. Continue north on 1A along the New Hampshire shoreline towards Portsmouth and then on north
into Maine. Don’t be in a hurry there are several great stops along the way. In York, ME stop by the Cape Neddick
lighthouse and see one of the most photograph lighthouses in the US just off Nubble road. Continue north on hwy
1A/1 along the coast and stop in Ogunquit for shopping and dinning and then into Kennebunkport. I like staying at
the Colony Hotel which is a grand hotel which takes you back in time of luxury, grace and charm. No A/C in rooms but
since it is on the oceanfront with the sea breeze its better. The quaint town has great restaurants, art galleries,
shopping and if time go by the Bush compound and say hello.

SW Colorado- Durango, Silverton, Ouray, & Telluride-
The best scenery for mountains in Colorado is around the Telluride area.
Starting in Durango please take the time to ride the Durango/Silverton Narrow Gauge Train because it is worth a day of your trip to have the
experience. From Durango you have several options to travel but if you are going into Utah towards Moab then first go west of Durango on Hwy 160
towards Cortez is Mesa Verde National Park and where the cliff dwelling are located. Seeing how people lived almost a thousand years ago was
fascinating. Also not far southwest from here is the four corners area where 4 states all meet together. Go back to Durango and head north on hwy
550 towards Silverton and Ouray. The road between Silverton and Ouray needs to be traveled during day so you can enjoy the breathtaking views.
Plus at night you can’t see what you are missing and the other people in the car won’t scream as loud as you drive. Ouray is one of our favorite towns
with warm friendly people, dinning and a natural Hot Springs swimming pool. The BonTon restaurant in the St. Elmo Hotel is worth the trip alone. Rock
climbing has become a big industry in Ouray and enthusiasts from all over come there to learn and to improve their skills. From Ouray continue north to
Ridgeway where John Wayne shot the movie “True Grit” and take Hwy 62 west and turn left on 145 to Telluride which has great snow skiing in the
winter with unique shops and restaurants year round plus stop by where Butch and Sundance robbed their first bank. From Telluride you can head
northwest to Moab, Utah on 145 which turns into CO 90 and once you cross into Utah becomes 46. If heading towards Arizona you can take 145 south
and 184 to Cortez and then you could visit Mesa Verde National park before heading into Arizona.
