Favorite Local Restaurants in the US-No Chains Please

In my many years and millions of miles of travel  I like to find new places that are exclusive to the
region and different than my home town.  Given a choice I prefer the local “mom & pop”
restaurants to chains whether I am at home or traveling.  I delight in old buildings that have
their own unique style and charm.  The atmosphere is better when an old building has been
converted into local restaurants, art galleries, or new unique shops found only in that town.
Restaurants that have been in business for many years with generations of families as
customers give it a distinctive character all its own.

I have begun to list some of my favorite’s restaurants both local for me (DFW area) and others I
have found along the way. Some of these restaurants I have been a regular customer  since I
was a small child which is approaching 50 years for me.  Some on this list were places my
parents and grandparents use to dine there.  Enjoy my list and I look forward to hearing from
you regarding your local favorites.
To submit your favorites restaurants there only 3 rules to
follow:

  1. A place where you eat at on a regular basis if it is local or a place
when traveling you make sure you go by to eat when in the area.
Great food, great service and not to expensive.  Example:  some on
my list are almost 200 miles from my home and I have gone there for
lunch. Most places on the list you will spend $5-$15 for lunch and
    $10-$30 for dinner per person.
  2. Absolutely No Chain Restaurants Allowed!  Don’t even ask.
  3. My multiple location rule---- still family owned but no more than 5
locations. Prefer locations usually in the older downtown part of a city
or town or off the beaten path.

Ranchman's Steakhouse in Ponder Texas.  John Wayne ate there.  It has been
featured on 2 different shows on the  Food Network.  It doesn't get any better than
this.  Enjoy if you are ever in North Texas.
Are you as tired of chain restaurants as I am?  While most chains have good food at
decent prices why eat at a restaurant just like the one 5 minutes from your home.
When traveling it a time to experiment, try new things and get a flair for the local
culture.  Trips should be fun and exciting not  predictable and uninspiring.
When I think of chain restaurants I think of the movie “Office Space” and the character
played by Jennifer Aniston who worked as a waitress in a chain restaurant.  The
manager was more concerned about her “flair” which was the many different types of
lapel pins she was required to wear on her uniform.  It’s hard for me to eat at a chain
restaurant without noticing the “flair” from my waiter.
